Fundamentalisms old and new? Inter-denominational alliances in a New Christian Right in Austria
Current developments indicate that a new Christian right is increasingly gaining influence in Austria. Consisting of an interdenominational network of groups and individual actors, this Christian right engages in "classic themes" of right-wing conservatism. These include issues and political initiatives that promote "family values" by rejecting abortion and LGBTQI rights. Increasingly, however, a new Christian right is using other channels and issues to gain influence. The article traces this development through examples and argues that the appearance of a new Christian right in Austria must be analysed against the backdrop of challenged state-religion relations and the tendencies of religious populism.
