Islamic (Neo-)Fundamentalism – beyond Islamism, Extremism, and Political Islam
Talking about contemporary Islam is often affected by non-scholarly discourses in the media and politic. To reframe these discussions as a scholarly discourse, rethinking these categories is needed. Islamic neo-fundaentalism is understood as a genuine modern phenomenon. Issues like glocalization umma, fundamentalism, Islam and state, and that of disembodied Islam to be re-embodied are discussed. Case studies on Turkey, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Salafism, and Hizb ut-Tahrir help to deepen the understanding of the conceptualization mentioned before.
We are proposing neo-fundamentalization as the most adequate idea to approach an important aspect of contemporary Islamic phenomena.
